WEAVING IN ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN AND FASHION @ VICIS 2018

RESPONSIVE DESIGN explores new applications, materials and forms of design with local and international, artists, designers, architects and students. The designers investigate the traditional culture of weaving, to bring it to new implementations, to transfer innovative technology and establish an international exchange in the long term.

The traditional technique of weaving has shaped cultures worldwide with its artistic and functional aspects and is one of the most elementary production techniques due to its diverse fields of application and possibilities. By dealing with new areas of application and the integration of new techniques and materials, the weaving tradition is preserved, revitalized and upgraded. Within the creative process, the expertise of Ethiopian, German and international artists, designers, architects, fashion designers, fabric manufacturers and programmers is used to develop new woven materials for art, fashion and design objects. During the 'Hackathons', innovative answers and solutions for local and global questions on design and function, as well as sustainability and digitization processes in the production of new materials, are sought and developed. The materials may e.g. be heat-exchanging, water-storing, energy-producing, antimicrobial, wind-repellent, waste-utilizing or edible. Trend terms such as 'wearable technologies', 'smart materials', 'digital living' are critically examined and their applicability as well as their added value for textile, woven materials are examined. The spectrum of objects created from woven material ranges from everyday objects, components and furniture to design objects and art.

The project, conceived by Nicola Borgmann and Juliane Kahl, will be shown at the Design Week Addis Abeba 2018 and at exhibitions at the various locations of cooperation institutions in Germany. It will also be presented with a panel discussion within the exhibition VICIS // ALWAYS CHANGE A RUNNING SYSTEM.
